Server Room & Comms Cabinet Monitoring with the LHT65N

LHT65N Use Case

Most businesses don't have a data centre. They have a comms cupboard: a rack of switches, a firewall, a NAS and a UPS, tucked into a room that was never designed to get rid of the heat. When the air conditioning unit fails on a Friday evening, nobody notices until Monday morning - when the network is down and the hardware has spent a weekend cooking.

The Dragino LHT65N is a simple, low-cost way to watch these spaces. It reports to Trackpac over LoRaWAN, completely separately from the network it's protecting, and alerts you by SMS, email or push the moment temperature or humidity heads out of range.

The Problem With Monitoring Your Network From Your Network

Many switches, UPSs and servers can report their own temperature. The catch is that those reports travel over the same network that is at risk. If the core switch overheats and shuts down, or the internet line drops, the warning never leaves the building.

LoRaWAN is an out-of-band path. The LHT65N talks to a LoRaWAN gateway - your own, or a public network gateway nearby - which forwards data to Trackpac independently of your LAN and Wi-Fi. No IP address, no firewall rules, no PoE port, no IT change request. For extra resilience, use a gateway with cellular backhaul so alerts survive even if your internet connection is the thing that failed. Not sure about coverage at your site? See what to check before you deploy.

Two Measurement Points From One Sensor

The LHT65N has a built-in temperature and humidity sensor plus a 2m external temperature probe, which works neatly in IT spaces:

Probe at the rack inlet

Equipment cares about the air it breathes in. Clip the probe to the front of the rack at mid-height, or inside a closed wall cabinet, to measure the temperature that actually matters.

Body on the wall for the room

The built-in sensor tracks room temperature and humidity. When the room and rack readings diverge, you have an airflow problem; when both climb together, it's the cooling.

Built-in temperature

-40 to 80°C, typical ±0.3°C accuracy, 0.01°C resolution.

Built-in humidity

0 to 96 %RH, 0.04 %RH resolution.

2m external probe

-55 to 125°C. ±0.5°C from -10 to 85°C, ±2°C across the full range.

2400mAh battery

Replaceable, rated for up to 10 years depending on reporting interval.

Datalog

Stores readings when out of coverage so they can be retrieved later.

LoRaWAN EU868

Works with standard LoRaWAN gateways and the Helium network.

Where Else It Earns Its Keep

Multi-site comms cupboards

Schools, retail branches and offices each with their own cabinet - all visible on one Trackpac dashboard.

UPS & battery rooms

Lead-acid UPS batteries age noticeably faster when kept warm. Track the room so you know why batteries are failing early.

Telecoms & street cabinets

Remote enclosures with no spare network port - the sensor needs nothing but LoRaWAN coverage.

Condensation from air con

Rising humidity can flag a leaking or iced-up AC unit. Pair it with a water leak sensor under the unit for full cover.

Suggested Alert Rules

  • Warning - rack inlet above 27°C: email the IT team.
  • Critical - rack inlet above 32°C: SMS to IT and the on-call contact, any time of day.
  • Humidity - room humidity above 60%: email, to catch AC condensation problems early.
  • Turn on resolved messages so everyone knows when the room is back to normal, and use a trigger lock interval to avoid a flood of repeat alerts.
  • Using a ticketing or monitoring tool already? Forward readings or alerts to it via a webhook.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature should a server room be?↓

ASHRAE's widely used guidance recommends server inlet air between 18°C and 27°C. What matters most is the temperature of the air entering the equipment, which is why measuring at the front of the rack is more useful than a single thermostat on the wall.

Why use a LoRaWAN sensor instead of a network-connected one?↓

A sensor that reports over your own network goes silent when that network fails - often exactly when something is overheating. The LHT65N reports over LoRaWAN, independent of your LAN and Wi-Fi, so alerts still reach you when the switch or firewall in the overheating rack has gone down. It also needs no IP address, firewall rules or PoE port.

Can one LHT65N measure two points in a server room?↓

Yes. The built-in sensor measures room temperature and humidity where the device is mounted, while the 2m external probe can be placed at a rack's cold-aisle inlet or inside a closed comms cabinet. That gives you two temperature readings from one device.

How long does the battery last?↓

The LHT65N's 2400mAh battery is rated for up to 10 years depending on how often it reports. It is replaceable, and there's no mains or PoE wiring to arrange in the first place.
