LoRaWAN® was designed for devices that send a little data, a long way, for a very long time. That's exactly what tracking assets needs.

Battery life measured in years

Trackers send small, infrequent messages, so batteries last months to years depending on the tracker and how often it reports. The Yabby3 is rated for over 10 years.

Long range from one gateway

2–10 km per gateway in towns and much further in the countryside, so a single gateway can cover a whole yard, site or depot.

Low cost to run

One flat £20 per tracker, per year, with live maps, geofences and alerts included. No setup fee and no hidden costs.

Indoors and out

LoRaWAN® reaches through walls and floors far better than Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and many trackers switch to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth positioning when GPS can't see the sky.

Global coverage, already there

We run our own LoRaWAN® network and roam on the Helium Network, so there's coverage across much of the globe. Add your own gateway only where you need guaranteed coverage on site.

An open standard

LoRaWAN asset tracking FAQs

Range, battery life, coverage and what you can track.

What is LoRaWAN®?

LoRaWAN® is a low-power, long-range wide-area network designed for Internet of Things devices. It's based on LoRa (Long Range) radio, which lets devices communicate over long distances (up to 50 km in rural areas and 5–10 km in urban areas) with very low power consumption. It's an open standard maintained by the LoRa Alliance, a non-profit whose members include IBM, Cisco and Semtech.

How far can LoRaWAN asset trackers work?

Coverage depends on environment and gateway placement. Typical urban ranges are 2–10 km, while rural deployments can extend much further with line-of-sight and optimised gateways.

How long do LoRaWAN tracker batteries last?

Battery life varies by reporting interval, movement, and environmental conditions. With optimised settings, many trackers operate for several months between charges or battery changes — making LoRaWAN ideal for equipment and asset tracking in the field.

Can I set alerts for movement and geofence breaches?

Yes. Trackpac supports real-time alerts for movement, geofence entry/exit, and custom events so teams can respond quickly to risk or exceptions.

Does LoRaWAN work indoors?

Yes — LoRaWAN® signals penetrate walls, floors, and metal structures far better than Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, making it well suited to warehouse asset tracking, indoor equipment monitoring, and multi-storey buildings. Performance depends on gateway placement and building materials.

What's the difference between LoRaWAN and GPS tracking?

GPS describes the satellite positioning technology used to determine location, while LoRaWAN is the wireless network protocol used to transmit that data back to the cloud. Most LoRaWAN asset trackers combine an on-board GPS chip with LoRaWAN connectivity, giving you accurate location data with very low power consumption.

Do I need my own gateway to use Trackpac?

Usually not. Trackpac runs its own LoRaWAN network and roams on the Helium Network, so there's coverage across much of the globe already. For guaranteed indoor or dense-urban coverage, deploying one or more private gateways is recommended. Our LoRaWAN consultancy team can help you plan gateway placement.

What assets can be tracked with LoRaWAN?

LoRaWAN asset tracking is used across a wide range of industries: vehicles and trailers in fleet tracking, construction equipment and tools on job sites, pallets and containers in logistics and supply chains, rental equipment, livestock, and high-value items in warehouses. If it moves and has value, a LoRaWAN GPS tracker can monitor it.
