Mushroom & Growing Room Humidity Monitoring with the LSN50v2-S31

LSN50v2-S31 Use Case

In a mushroom fruiting room or a propagation room, humidity isn't a side issue. It's one of the main things you're growing with. When a humidifier runs dry or the heating trips overnight, conditions can drift far enough to affect a whole flush or tray of seedlings before anyone walks in the next morning.

This guide is for mushroom growers, propagators, vertical and indoor farms, and microgreens producers. It shows how a Dragino LSN50v2-S31, with its probe inside the room and its battery unit outside, reporting into Trackpac, keeps a constant eye on temperature and humidity in every room and alerts you when either moves outside the range you work to. For the wider case for temperature sensors, see our overview of real-time temperature monitoring.

Why Growing Rooms Need Close Watching

Indoor crops are grown in controlled conditions precisely because they respond to them. Each stage tends to have its own targets: mushrooms commonly need very high humidity during fruiting and a different temperature for spawn run, while seedlings and microgreens need warmth and moisture to germinate but can suffer when air stays damp and still for too long. Drift too far in either direction and you may see slower growth, uneven crops, drying caps or a higher risk of plant disease.

The equipment that holds those conditions, from misting systems and humidifiers to heaters, fans and air handling, mostly runs unattended. A controller can only hold the setpoint if the kit behind it is working. A blocked nozzle, an empty reservoir, a tripped breaker or a stuck damper can go unnoticed for hours, especially at night and at weekends. An independent sensor in each room is a simple way to find out quickly when that happens.

Why the LSN50v2-S31 Suits Humid Rooms

Most room sensors are a single box that has to sit in the air it measures, which in a fruiting chamber means near-saturated air and regular wash-downs. The LSN50v2-S31 splits the job. Its Sensirion SHT31 probe sits in a waterproof, anti-condensation casing with a vented cap on a 3 metre cable, so the probe goes inside the room while the battery and radio unit stays outside, up to 3 metres away, on a corridor wall or the outside of the chamber.

The probe measures the air around it, so hang it at crop height rather than pushing it into substrate or trays. It reads 0 to 99.9% RH to ±2% RH and -40 to 80°C. By default it reports every 20 minutes, and it can also check every minute and send an alarm straight away when humidity or temperature crosses a limit set on the device. If coverage drops, readings are stored and sent once it reconnects. There's no mains, no Wi-Fi and no SIM to arrange, and the battery is rated for up to 10 years depending on how often it reports.

Where to Use It

Each LSN50v2-S31 has one probe, so it watches one room or chamber. Use one sensor per space you manage separately. These are the places it suits best:

Mushroom fruiting rooms

The most humid space on most farms. Probe among the shelves or bags, unit outside the door, so you know straight away if misting or humidification stops.

Spawn run & incubation rooms

Usually run to a different temperature from fruiting. A separate sensor and tag per room keeps each stage's alerts and history apart.

Propagation rooms

Warm, humid rooms for cuttings and young plants, where a failed heater or humidifier can set back a whole batch.

Vertical farms

Stacked racks can hold warmer, damper air at the top than the bottom. A probe at the level that matters most gives you a reading of the crop, not the doorway.

Microgreens

Short, fast crops where a few bad days can cost a harvest. Humidity alerts help you spot rooms that are staying too damp or drying out between waterings.

Indoor growing rooms & containers

Converted units, insulated rooms and container farms, often on sites nobody visits overnight. The unit goes outside the room, the probe goes in with the crop.

Installing the LSN50v2-S31 in a Growing Room

Fitting takes a few minutes per room and is easiest between batches, when the room is empty and clean. The probe goes inside; the main unit stays outside, within reach of the 3 metre cable.

  1. 1

Order pre-onboarded, scan and name it

Buy the LSN50v2-S31 from Hexaspot with the Pre-onboard to Trackpac option, scan its QR code in the Trackpac app and give it a clear name such as "Fruiting room 3". Tag it with the room type and site so it picks up the right alert rules.

  2. 2

Mount the main unit outside the room

Fix the enclosure on the corridor side of the wall or the outside of the chamber, close to where the cable will pass through. It stays out of the humid air and out of the way of cleaning.

  3. 3

Route the cable in and seal the entry

Pass the probe cable through an existing gland, cable entry or a small hole, then seal around it so the room keeps its humidity and nothing leaks along the cable.

  4. 4

Hang the probe at crop height

Place the probe in the air around the crop, not in substrate, trays or a puddle, and away from the direct spray of a mister or the blast of an air outlet, so it reads the room rather than one nozzle.

  5. 5

    Check the first readings

Confirm readings are arriving on the dashboard and compare them with your existing controller or a handheld meter. Watch a full day and night before setting final thresholds.

Setting Growing Room Alert Rules

Start from the range you already work to for each room and stage, and set the alert a little outside it, so normal swings during misting or watering don't trigger it but a genuine failure does. Many mushroom growers aim for very high humidity during fruiting; a propagation room or microgreens room will have its own targets.

Trackpac rules can alert on temperature or humidity above or below a threshold and on low battery, by email, SMS or push through the Trackpac mobile app. Each rule can target a tag, so every fruiting room shares one set of rules and every propagation room another. A few rules cover most situations:

Humidity falling: misting may have stopped

A below-threshold humidity rule tells you when a humidifier has run dry, a nozzle has blocked or a door has been left open.

Temperature out of range: check the HVAC

High and low temperature rules catch a tripped heater, a failed cooling unit or a stuck fan before the room drifts too far.

Out of hours: the right person

Time windows let you send overnight and weekend alerts by SMS to whoever is on call, and keep daytime alerts to the team on site.

Ongoing problem: no message flood

A trigger-lock interval stops every report turning into another text while someone is already dealing with the room.

Back in range: all clear

When the room returns to normal, a "resolved" message follows, so everyone knows the fix has worked.

Low battery: plan the swap

The battery is rated for years, and a low-battery alert gives you time to change it between batches rather than mid-crop.

For rooms where conditions can change quickly, the on-device alarms add a faster layer: the sensor checks every minute and reports straight away when temperature or humidity crosses its high or low limit, rather than waiting for the next scheduled report. Those limits are configured on the device itself, and Hexaspot or Trackpac support can help you set them.

Trackpac also shows a Mould Risk indicator derived from temperature and humidity. In a fruiting room, where very high humidity is the goal, it is likely to sit high most of the time, so plain humidity thresholds are usually the better alert there. If you already log faults in another system, webhooks can forward alerts to it. Trackpac passes the alert on; it doesn't restart misting, humidifiers or HVAC itself.

Using the History to Compare Batches

Alerts deal with failures, but the history is where the longer-term value sits. Tag each sensor by room, stage or site and the dashboard shows every room on one screen. The graphs let you see how closely each room held its targets through a batch, how long it took to recover after harvesting or cleaning, and whether one room always runs a little warmer or drier than the others.

Export the readings as CSV and line them up against your own yield and quality records, and you can start to see which conditions went with your best and worst batches. A read-only dashboard link lets a business partner, consultant or customer see the rooms without being able to change anything. If a probe is damaged or disconnected, the sensor reports an obviously invalid reading, so a fault is easy to spot.

Growing Under Glass as Well?

The LSN50v2-S31 is built for enclosed, very humid rooms where you want the electronics outside and only the probe in with the crop. If you also grow in greenhouses or polytunnels, where a simple all-in-one sensor can hang among the plants, read about greenhouse and polytunnel monitoring with the LHT65N. Both report into the same Trackpac dashboard, so every growing space sits side by side.

Frequently Asked Questions

What humidity should a mushroom fruiting room be kept at?↓

It depends on the species, the stage and the grower's own method, so there isn't one right figure. Many growers aim for very high relative humidity during fruiting, often somewhere in the region of 85 to 95% RH, with different targets for spawn run and pinning. The best approach is to set your Trackpac thresholds around the range you already work to, then watch the graphs for a few batches and adjust.

Why put the main unit outside the growing room?↓

A fruiting chamber or propagation room is about as humid as an indoor space gets. Many room sensors have to sit in that air, battery, electronics and all. The LSN50v2-S31 only puts its probe inside: the Sensirion SHT31 element sits in a waterproof, anti-condensation casing on a 3 metre cable, while the battery and radio unit is fixed outside the room, on a corridor wall or the outside of the chamber. It also keeps the box off shelves and racking you need to clean.

Can Trackpac switch the misting or humidifier back on?↓

No. Trackpac doesn't control misting, humidifiers, fans or HVAC. It sends alerts by email, SMS or push to the people you choose, and can forward them to other systems by webhook. Your existing controller still runs the room; the LSN50v2-S31 is an independent check that tells you when conditions drift, for example because a humidifier has run dry or a fan has stopped.

Does the LSN50v2-S31 measure CO2?↓

No. The LSN50v2-S31 measures temperature and relative humidity only. Many mushroom growers also manage fresh air exchange and CO2, and they will need a separate instrument for that. The S31 covers the temperature and humidity side, with alerts and a history for every room.

Where can I buy the LSN50v2-S31 for use with Trackpac?↓
